Fiction writer and essayist Peter Orner has written an intriguing and exquisite book of essays entitled "Am I Alone Here?" Part memoir, part travel diary, part literary criticism, Orner weaves vignettes from the death of his father with whom he had a problematic relationship, to the demise of his first marriage to the joys of parenthood with loving and insightful examinations of revered stories by Chekhov, Kafka, Welty, Babel, Woolf, and Cheever, among others. To quote the NY Times, Orner's book is an entrancing attempt to catch "the personal, messy, even embarrassing ways reading and living bleed into each other."
David has selected six essays from the collection, many of which look at authors that we have discussed in prior sessions of our literary program. All with an eye toward triggering a wider conversation about the importance of great literature and the ways we use it to give our lives meaning. An extraordinary book and an extraordinary morning of literary conversation.
